Food Safety
Our experience allows us to know and understand how they work.
What is FSSC 22000?
FSSC 22000 – Food Safety Certification
It is a globally recognized food safety management system.
It is based on international standards to ensure food safety throughout the entire supply chain, from primary production to the final consumer.
This standard provides a robust framework to identify, prevent and manage risks related to food safety.
Companies Obligated to implement FSSC 22000
Mainly, the standard is aimed at companies involved in the production, processing, manufacturing, and handling of food products.
This includes food and beverage manufacturers, food ingredient producers, and food packaging companies.
Is FSSC 22000 recognized by GFSI?
FSSC 22000 is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), making it a highly prestigious and sought-after certification in the food industry.
This recognition ensures that the certification meets the highest international standards, facilitating access to new markets and increasing competitiveness.
Does FSSC 22000 cover HACCP?
FSSC 22000 encompasses the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), integrating them into its structure.
This means that the certification not only meets the international food safety management requirements of ISO 22000, but also ensures the effective implementation of preventive food safety measures through the HACCP approach.
Differences between FSSC 22000 and ISO 22000
Additional requirements
Although the certification is based on the ISO 22000 standard, it is distinguished by including additional sector-specific requirements for prerequisite programs (PRPs) and by being recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
GFSI Recognition
This recognition by GFSI ensures broader acceptance in the global market, increasing confidence in the food supply chain.
Frequently asked questions
No, FSSC 22000 and ISO 22000 are not the same. ISO 22000 is an international standard that defines the requirements for a food safety management system applicable to any organization in the food chain. FSSC 22000, on the other hand, is a certification scheme based on ISO 22000, but includes additional sector-specific requirements and prerequisite programs (PRPs), and is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
Version 6 of FSSC 22000 introduces significant changes to strengthen risk management, expand the scope of certification and improve transparency in the supply chain, with the inclusion of updated specific requirements to ensure food safety and product quality.
Additional requirements of FSSC 22000, especially version 6, include:
- Expanded risk management to address emerging risks.
- Expanded scope to include food safety, product quality and sustainability.
- Possibility of carrying out remote audits.
- Emphasis on transparency and communication in the supply chain.
- Updates and clarifications on specific requirements such as allergen management, product safety, and supplier management.
ISO 22000 is applicable to any organization within the food supply chain, regardless of size or complexity. This includes primary producers, food manufacturers, shippers, warehousemen, retailers, and food service companies. That is, any product related to food, from its production to its sale, can access ISO 22000 certification, as long as it meets the requirements established in the standard.
